Early November 2017, Harry Potter fans across the world rejoiced as Niantic confirmed the existence of the new augmented reality wizard world coming to iOS and Android. The launch follows Niantic’s release of one of the most successful games in mobile history, Pokemon GO. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a partnership between Niantic and Warner Bros, the latter whom just recently created a label specifically for the release of new Harry Potter games (something we can all get behind!).
While no official release date has been given, a spokesman for Niantic has stated that the game will be released some time in 2018. Due to the fairly distant release, details regarding gameplay are fairly sparse. From what we’ve been given, we are expecting an augmented reality world where you will be able to cast spells, find artifacts, and create your own unique, illustrious wizarding career.
While still in the speculative phase, it is likely that you will be able to join a Harry Potter house (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin or Ravenclaw), creating factions that are similar to the team gameplay established in Pokemon GO (Valor, Mystic, or Instinct). The official website also mentions that users will “encounter legendary beasts” as they journey through the wizarding world. It is likely that these beasts could be some of the many encountered in the recent Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
However, until the official release date has been confirmed for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the release date cannot be narrowed down any further until some time in 2018. Hopefully as we near the final release date we will begin to see some more examples of what to expect from the gameplay. Until then, we will have to leave our Harry Potter movie collection on repeat as we prepare to put our wizarding expertise to the real life test!
