Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is expected to be a free to play game, just like its predecessor from Niantic Pokemon GO. While the game is free to download and play, the game will make its money from in-app purchases. In Pokemon GO, in-app purchases could be made to purchase PokeCoins, and PokeCoins can be redeemed for a wide variety of in-game items. These items include PokeBalls, lucky eggs, incense, and lure modules. In-app purchases have helped Pokemon GO become one of the most successful mobile games of all time.
In-app purchases typically give users a slight competitive advantage, although they certainly are not necessary in order to play and/or succeed in the game. Offering in-app purchases follows the business model that has been known as the “freemium” model, a model offering a game with both free and premium aspects that is used by many companies. This model allows users to play the game for free but entices serious gamers to spend money on items that will help give them a slight competitive advantage. This model was popularized by games such as Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga, two of the most successful mobile games of all time.
Fortunately for the penny pinchers among us, Wizards Unite will not cost any money to play. However, serious wizards and witches may pay for in-app purchases in order to enhance their gaming experience. If executed correctly, devoted Harry Potter fans should be happy to spend a few extra bucks for a game that many people will likely be spending hours per day playing.
